Under the Basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo, near Circus Maximus is Case Romane del Celio : the remains of frescoed houses. They are remarkably well preserved.
Case Romane del Celio is also known as the home of the martyrs Giovanni and Paolo, and you can trace four centuries of history and see the coexistence of paganism and Christianity.
The large frescoed rooms were originally shops and warehouses of a multi-storey popular building (insula), then were in fact transformed during the III century. AD in an elegant house where the saints lived, and are reported to have been buried.
