Naples day 3 Capodimonte Museum

Sunday ... a glorious autumn day,was perfect for a trip to the Capodimonte Museum.  This houses a cornucopia of art from the 12th century to the 21st century.
The very first items we saw were by Anslem Kiefer.  Works called Mare  Nostrum  and Hero and Leander, created in 2005.
These images were large and commanding. The current refugee crisis in Europe added a great weight to the viewing experience. The leaden boats seemingly doomed for disaster were very evocative.

Then it was on to see works such as The Massacre of the Innocents.

But this horrendous story of the slaughter of the Innocents was countered by the tenderness and joy in some of the depictions of the Adoration of the Christian child. All the joy of every family that has welcomed a newborn was touching.

War, families, joy, sorrow over the ages, interpreted by artists forever.

Naples day 2 Gallerie d'Italia

A large bank called Intesa Sanpaolo has created a project which involves the display of its own collection of work..it is called Gallerie d'Italia and is spread over three cities.
In Naples it is housed in the Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano. There were some very beautiful works on display, including the Martyrdom of St Ursula by Caravaggio.
Also on display was a collection of works by Giuseppe Ricco.
The collection included works by Vincenzo Gemito who was working in the late 19th century.
The work by Gemito looks so like the work of William Kentridge.

Naples day 1

The apartment to is in an area where there are artists who make metal object to - some decorative but many very industrial looking. The houses are close together. There is nothing glamorous. But there is an honesty and sense of camaraderie that the close living quarters seems to engender.  Images in order. . the street (vico ) where we are loving. Last image is of the closest cafe.. the cafe of joy.

Serenity induced by the amazing cloud formation helped easy the ennui of the long flights from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi  then Rome then Naples, a bus to central Naples and a walk up hill before we found our lovely appartment in the backstreets of Naples.

A4 Art Australia

 A4 Art Australia is run by the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria Inc. The Society is a non-profit organization, run on a voluntary basis by artists for the benefit of artists and those interested in the arts. It is based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and was founded in 1938. 

A4 Art Australia will be held in the Gallery on Herring Island (Richmond) as part of the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival (HISAF) 2016. Melbourne. Herring Island is a unique island in the middle of the Yarra River, between Richmond and South Yarra, only 3km from the Melbourne CBD. The HISAF website is HERE.

The exhibition (and gallery) will be open to the public 11.30am - 4.30pm on the following dates: 19, 20, 26, 27 MARCH and 2, 3 April 2016.
