The Garden of Sorrows

On Saturday I went to the launch at The Hill of Content bookshop of this very beautiful book of Australian fables -  written by John Hughes and illustrated by Marco Luccio. The stories are delightful - instructive and often wry in tone. The illustrations are not only masterfully executed, they complement the stories perfectly.
I intend to go to the exhibition at Steps Gallery to see the exhibition of etchings by Marco - if you cannot make it, have a look at the link here http://www.marcoluccio.com/gallery/garden-of-sorrows.php
The Steps Gallery is located Ground Floor 62 Lygon Street, Carlton South near the Trades Hall building. Melways Ref 2B F11.
In the window of the bookshop was a display including an etching plate (below) from which one of the illustrations was taken.
This photo below does not do justice to the lovely window display

Wendy Ewald at Centre for Contemporary Photography Melbourne

What a delight to be able to see the work of Wendy Ewald at the CCP as part of the Melbourne Festival.
From the exhibition synopsis:
\ For more than forty years, Wendy Ewald has been making art with children, families and teachers in countries across the world, from the US and Colombia to India, South Africa and Saudi Arabia. Both artist and educator, Ewald embraces the principles of experiential learning. Using pictures to teach children and teaching children to take pictures, she combines their astonishing images with her own, and adds their rich, colourful and often poignant stories of coming to terms with situations of social conflict and rapid change.
I really enjoyed the intimacy of many of the images - because they were taken by children, they were often taken from a child's perspective both literally and physically.
These images are of children's fantasies about their aspirations

This is showing preparation for The Day of the Dead
