Naples is famous for the creation of Christmas Cribs, or 'presepe'. There is a whole street full of craftsman making figures: animals, domestic scenes, wise kings, windmills and wells with moving parts, ovens which glow, bundles of vegetables and fruits. .. it's all there. As well as the holy family.
You can buy a completed crib, or buy the base and furnish the crib by buying individual pieces. Some of the figurines were exquisite - the work of true artisans. Some were mass produced. But the sentiment. .. welcoming the new born is clearly conveyed.
