The Registan, Samarkand, Uzbekistan

This is a complex of three  buildings. All medresses where students came to study: not just religion, but literature, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and other subjects. The two buildings facing each other are mirror images, but the one on the right was built after the first. And the one in the background was built last. The firts one on the left was built  in 1420 by Tamerlaine's grandson - a learned man and  quite a scholar.




There is some wonderful decoration - much of which was restored by the Russians during their period of power. 





 Students stayed in small rooms around a courtyard (the entrance to one below)


Inside the room was quite simple.
